México doblaría turismo médico

Al menos unos 150,000 estadounidenses viajan cada año para acceder a servicios de salud baratos el país es un destino natural por su cercanía geográfica y bajos costos, según expertos.

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO (CNNExpansión.com) — México podría convertirse en el destino favorito de los estadounidenses que salgan de su país en búsqueda de atención médica en los próximos años, debido a su cercanía geográfica y a costos hasta 50% más económicos, estimaron diversos expertos.

Por ejemplo, un bypass gástrico, en donde se coloca un cintillo ajustable en el estómago o se realizan algunos cortes para controlar el peso y el apetito de los pacientes cuesta un promedio de 25,000 dólares en Estados Unidos (EU) y en México el costo puede ser en promedio de 11,990 dólares, según datos de la firma estadounidense de servicios para la salud Medical Tourism Corporation.

“Aunque no existen cifras exactas del turismo médico, la estimación conservadora es que más de 150,000 estadounidenses viajaron en 2006 al extranjero para tratamientos médicos”, explicó el profesor del Instituto Panamericano de Alta Dirección de Empresa (IPADE), Sergio Raimond-Kedilhac.

Agregó que esta cifra podría doblarse o triplicarse entre 2008 y 2009.

Según estimados oficiales, actualmente hay 45 millones de personas sin cobertura médica en Estados Unidos.

Entre los hospitales que en EU ya se listan para los turistas médicos están el Hospital Ángeles de Tijuana y el CHRISTUS Muguerza International en Monterrey.

La Asociación de Turismo Médico (MTA, por sus siglas en inglés) en Estados Unidos incluso negoció con diversas instituciones financieras proporcionar financiamiento hasta por 20,000 dólares por paciente a aquellos estadounidenses que busquen viajar al extranjero para recibir servicios de salud.

“Esto abrirá las puestas a millones de americanos que deseen viajar para cirugías, pero que no tienen los recursos financieros para hacerlo”, afirmó el presidente del MTA, Jonathan Edelheit.

El turismo médico es aquel que busca acceder a servicios de salud preventiva, cirugía cosmética y reconstructiva, tratamientos dentales, reducción de peso, tratamiento de diabetes, operaciones de la vista, oído, cardiovasculares, cirugía cardiaca, tratamientos geriátricos y de cáncer y hasta transplantes de hígado, riñón y cadera.

Sorpresivamente, este tipo de servicios se están encontrando, con mayor frecuencia, en países como México, Argentina, Colombia, Canadá, Costa Rica, Brasil y Cuba.

La consultoría internacional McKinsey & Company estimó que EU contribuye apenas con el 10% del turismo médico en el mundo, mientras que el Medio Oriente provee el 21%, Europa el 17%, América Latina el 15%, África el 5%, Oceanía el 4% y Asia el 21%.
